The Grim Imperials – El Drag Superior

The Grim Imperials Promo 2 The Grim Imperials based in San Diego, CA are bursting onto the scene with a fresh take on a retro sound they call rhythm and punk.  The release of  El Drag Superior truly shows the range and strength of their sound.  Fans of rock n roll, The Rolling Stones, The Doors and grunge/garage music need to check out this four piece band.

With the release of their 9 track album, El Drag Superior, the listener is brought right back into the loud and greasy sound that is The Grim Imperials.  Kicking off with “Dumb Luck,” the listener is thrust into a sound reminiscent of the past, but at a much faster pace.  An adjective that comes to mind is “groovy” but not in a bad way.  The song makes you want to dance and sing along.

“She Got” is one of the catchiest tunes on the album and is bound to get stuck in your head after a few listens. Another highlight is “Fat the Bird”. The song features heavy organ overtures popularized in sixties rock n roll and not often heard in the rock of today.

The Grim Imperials PromoAs the album continues through the remaining tracks, the listener is treated to distorted, grunge style lyrics and instrumentation and all the while The Grim Imperials maintain their characteristic rhythm.  Leading up to one of the fastest tracks of the album, “Just Head,” which features a great combination of guitar solos and The Grim Imperials rock style.

With “Magic Potion” closing out the album, it seems to carry the listener off into a distant era of psychedelic culture.  By the Barricade recommends picking up El Drag Superior to experience the fun, retro rock  that is The Grim Imperials.
