I The Mighty Kansas Review + Photos 7/28

Eager fans packed The Jackpot Saloon in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday on June 28th for the fourth night of I The Mighty’s first headlining tour. From the start of soundcheck, it was obvious that the night featuring openers Too Close To Touch and Hail The Sun the stage was set for a night to be remembered.

Too Close To Touch 8

Too Close To Touch, a Kentucky-born group of five that manages to pack a punch, set the tone for the night. Even with such a short set, Too Close To Touch knows how to interact with and appeal to an audience very well; especially when both vocalist, Keaton, and guitarist, Mason, managed to hop into the crowd for a few songs. It was enough to jostle the wallflowers and encourage the energy already surging through the floor.

Too Close To Touch shifted effortlessly between songs, going from a theatrical number like “Pretty Little Thing” one second to a heavier number called “Hell To Pay”. Each transition was seamless, and it was obvious the fans wanted more when the band’s time on the stage came to a close.

Hail The Sun, a group that proved they cannot be lumped into genre stereotypes was next on the bill. With their vocalist on drums the stage was left open for a lot of energetic fast paced footwork, sending each guitarist into scurrying back and forth onstage during “Human Target Practice”. The San Francisco natives brought a calmer air with them for their performance, but that didn’t do anything to slow them down, until “Relax / Divide” brought vocalist Donovan out from behind his drums and closer to the crowd.

I The Mighty started their set with “An Epilogue As A Prologue” off their latest release “Connector.” The band quickly jumped straight into “Lady Of Death” soon after. Someone just getting into I The Mighty would be surprised that this was the band’s first headlining tour. The band’s fantastic and energetic stage presence has become commonplace for long time fans who have been anticipating this tour for a very long time. Never being one to disappoint, I The Mighty’s set incorporated crowd favorites from not only “Connector”, but from both “Satori”, the band’s first full-length album their self-titled EP. Every word from every song was met with an echoing chorus of crowd’s voices.

As it is with every good show, it seemed that I The Mighty’s set came to an end all too quickly. Fans chanting for an encore filled the Jackpot’s small space. Without hesitation, the band was back on stage finishing the night with “The Dreamer” before taking the time to meet every ecstatic fan that was waiting for them once they came off the stage. I The Mighty’s debut headlining tour is one not to be missed for fans of the band and everyone still skeptical that I The Mighty are worthy of a headlining spot. Be sure to catch their tour when it passes through your state or you’ll truly regret it.
